SKANDINIEKI
Skandinieki
Upe UPE CD 049 (2003)
Formed back in the Soviet days of 1976, and still led, by folklore movement
pioneers Helmï Stalte and Dainis Stalts, the folk choir Skandinieki sings the
old Latvian and Liv songs. Thirty songs, of rural life, nature, seasons, gods
and symbolism, in which the Sun character is prominent. In sound something like
a softer-voiced, less arranged, plainsong-like parallel of Bulgaria’s folk
ensembles, they have a very Latvian quiet dignity.
